At the age of 84 Father Martin passed on today. For those of us that looked to the church for answers Father Martin carried the torch with eloquence, humor and activism to battle the disease of alcoholism. For the field of addiction Father Martin was an Icon! In 1986 during my rehab stay Father Martin’s “Chalk Talk on Alcoholism” was an eye opener for me. I had struggled in my attempted recovery from 1980 on and could not grasp why I could not keep my word at Lent or my numerous attempts at “The Pledge”.
Father Martin carried the message with integrity and credibility for this young Catholic man. Until then every Priest I went to visit sent me home with my “Penance” and a little less guilt! Father Martin’s legacy will carry on forever. I am grateful for his wonderful message, love and humor. May he rest in Peace…
